Be careful of how hard you close your doors in near 0° weather.

This car takes a more than normal application of force to get the doors to close. But I’ve closed them many times in much colder weather without exploding glass everywhere.

Oh well.

The car sat this way for a few days until I was able to begin the search.

Luckily a not too far junkyard had one of these cars and it still had the window!

Now to get it out...

Everything came apart as easily at is supposed to. Except the last screw holding the door pull/arm rest on. And I forgot a hammer. Vise-grips to the rescue!

Also: Picking bits of glass out of the snow covered parking lot is worse than cleaning it out of the vehicle.

That looks like a miserable, yet productive, day at the junkyard. I’m shocked you found a 123 with any parts left on it.

On a broken-glass-related note, I once dropped a full 12-pack of beer on loose stone behind my house. The kids play in that area all the time, making piles of stone, etc. so I had to clean up a whole 3' diameter area with painstaking detail, in about 30 degrees - which isn’t that cold, unless you’re dealing with beer-soaked glass and rocks. I tried scooping up large sections with a shovel, but the stones were frozen together in such a way that it didn’t really work. So, yeah.

On a more related note, I want a W123 in my life.

Right? I was surprised as well. I want to go back and grab the one bundt wheel it had left. Didn’t have anything to take it off at the time. Also want to grab the trunk lid and maybe the 3 doors I didn’t mangle(if their rust is less significant).

On a related note, some years ago, a window regulator on the fintail broke, and it was surprisingly easy to replace. These cars aren’t bad for DIY jobs, at least when it comes to less intensive non-mechanical work.

Yeah, these are super easy to take apart. Making a new moisture barrier from a sheet f plastic was the most difficult thing.

Wow, sorry that happened. I’ve never been anywhere so cold that this was a possibility, so if I ever am, at least now I’ll know to be careful.

As long as you’re not in an old jalopy where you need to slam the doors to get them to close properly you should be alright. :)
